 WHAT IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE?

Periodontal disease is very common, but does not always have distinct symptoms. It is an inflammation and infection of the supporting structures of the teeth (gums, bone, ligaments, root surfaces) that eventually results in the loss of teeth. You may notice that your gums bleed easily, that you have a bad taste in your mouth, that your gums appear red or swollen, that your teeth appear longer or have shifted.  If left untreated it can worsen over time and impact the integrity of your gums in a serious way.  Also can result in substantial health issues.

Helpful Tips for a healthier smile:

  • Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing regularly to remove plaque from between teeth.
  • Visiting the dentist routinely for a check-up and professional cleaning. Your dentist or hygienist may recommend more frequent cleanings depending on the extent of the gum disease.
  • No smoking!!  Smoking weakens your body’s infection fighters (your immune system). This makes it harder to fight off a gum infection.
